What is earlobe reduction?

Earlobe reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of overly large, stretched, or pendulous earlobes. The surgical technique used to modify your earlobes will depend on your unique anatomy, but all techniques involve making small incisions to modify your earlobe. Earlobe reduction is usually performed under local anesthesia, unless it is being done in conjunction with other, more invasive procedures.

Possible causes of elongated/stretched earlobes:

  • Genetics
  • Age-related loss of skin elasticity
  • Natural stretching of ear piercings
  • Ear gauging or stretching
  • Long-term use of heavy earrings

How is earlobe reduction performed?

Dr. Hicks performs earlobe reduction procedures in the clinic procedure room under local anesthesia. After ensuring that your earlobe is numb, she makes small incisions within your earlobe. Sections of your earlobe are removed or repositioned to achieve a shorter earlobe.

Finally, the incisions are closed with small sutures. The procedure generally takes about 30 minutes.

What can I expect after earlobe reduction?

You may have some mild swelling, tenderness, numbness, and bruising around the earlobes for a few days after your procedure. You may resume most of your daily activities and work immediately, but strenuous workouts and activities should be avoided for about 5 days. You will need to be cautious when getting dressed or brushing/styling your hair – take care not to pull on your earlobe or the sutures when doing these activities.

It is best to avoid wearing clip-on earrings or applying any pressure to your earlobes for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. There will be some swelling, but you will be able to see improvement right after the procedure.

Benefits of earlobe reduction:

  • Reduce the size of overly large earlobes
  • Remove excess skin from floppy earlobes
  • Improve your ability to wear different types of earrings
  • Improve self-esteem and confidence
